Loving the Difference

Growing our cultural competency

We recognise Te Ao Māori (the Māori world view) has a unique and special place in Aotearoa, and our identity. We support our own people to feel culturally safe and grow their understanding of Te Ao Māori. We are working to weave Māori culture and practices into our business, and nurture this, so we can deliver great results and achieve broader outcomes, by working together. Here are some of the initiatives already in place:

  • Fletcher Living are about proud to offer our Te Kaa programme focused on igniting Māori Cultural competency to all of our employees. Te Kaa is a modular programme giving participants the foundation to be able to consider Māori culture within decision-making processes, policies and procedures; and strengthens their ability to connect with Māori in a meaningful way.
  • Our Māori leadership program, Whakatupu, is developing a pipeline of Māori leaders.
  • Fletcher Building is a principal sponsor of the First Foundation and Tupu Toa, which focus on development and work opportunities for indigenous youth and those from challenging backgrounds.
  • We offer a 10 week online Te Reo Māori course for beginners run by Te Awa Māori that teaches the basics of the Māori language to enrolees.

Fostering the Growth of our Wāhine

We’re proud that the Fletcher Residential and Development division’s total employee population is over 40 percent female, but we’re not stopping there. We are striving to grow our female operational leader population to 40 percent by 2027 by supporting and fostering our wāhine at all levels. We believe in equal opportunities regardless of gender, and to activate true change in a historically male-dominated industry we are holding ourselves accountable and making our gender diversity aspirations both ambitious and public.

Employee Advocate Groups

Employee Led Action Groups that support Diversity, Equity and Inclusion including: FB Pride that champions our rainbow community members, Tātai, Fletcher Building’s Māori network, and The Equality Network aimed at supporting our wāhine.

Pride Pledge and Rainbow Tick

As an equal opportunities employer, Fletcher Living encourages staff to bring their whole self to work. We love differences – in all their forms, and believe diversity make us a stronger and richer community. We also want our culture to reflect our customers, and over the past few years we have been promoting rainbow inclusion through a number of initiatives as a response to this. To help us, we’ve partnered with Pride Pledge and become a Gold Sponsor. With their guidance we’re working to improve the safety, visibility, and inclusion of rainbow members in our workforce. We are also building on Fletcher Building’s Rainbow Tick Certification. Our view is the ‘tick’ is not the sign of a job done, Rainbow inclusion is a continuous journey of learning, of acceptance and diversity. Read More
